No. The Universal Solar Canopy is designed to fit on the top of an existing roof.
The canopy frame is sized to fit the width and length of most golf carts roofs. Different lengths will be optional to house additional solar panels and to accommodate for shorter and longer roof lengths.
The canopy can be attached with different styles of latches, depending on design of the golf cart roof. The canopy can also be attached by bolts.
The canopy is wired to a power converter by two wires that go through the roof, down a roof strut, and to the converter. The converter is a small unit that can be installed under the seat or even behind the front seat backrest. The converter is then wired to the battery or batteries that exist in the golf cart. These batteries can be AVG or lithium ion.
The charge controller has an optional Bluetooth add-on that will give you real time data of the charge your battery is receiving as well as the energy flow, level of power stored, and the health of the battery. Depending on type of battery set up, including type and number of batteries being used, more than one controller may be required.
The charge controller works much like your golf carts battery charging unit, in that it shuts off automatically once the battery is fully charged. There is no/off switch or a switch to determine where the battery is being charged from, that is handled automatically between the golf cart’s outlet charging converter and the solar panel charge controller.
No! It weighs just under 20lbs. with the solar panel attached to the canopy frame.
Absolutely! A typical 48 volt golf cart costs between $1-$5 to charge completely. So depending on how often you charge your cart, the savings can be tremendous.
The canopy charges at a similar rate to a typical wall outlet, charging a 12 volt battery in about 1.5 - 2 hours.
Lead acid and lithium ion batteries can be damaged by running them down to empty. The Universal Solar Canopy being connected and constantly charging during daylight hours, can extend the life and performance of your batteries by never letting this happen. Lithium ion batteries should not be initially charged using the full strength of a wall outlet. It is recommended by manufacturers to start off with a weaker charge before using the full force of a typical outlet and converter. Solar can alleviate that problem by always initiating at a slower trickle charge.
The solar panel is weatherproof and durable, guaranteed of 25 years. Wiring and connections are also weatherproof, durable and minimal. The shape of the Universal Solar Canopy is aerodynamic and follows the general shape of most golf cart roofs. It is also low profile which helps you navigate through areas with low height clearances. (Depending on the height of your golf cart.) The solar panels can be cleaned with microfiber towels and with glass cleaners.
